Anthropic Lost $42 Billion, So Why Is It Still Worth Nearly $1 Trillion?
How can a company report record losses while its valuation multiplies? A leaked IPO document from Claude developer Anthropic has raised exactly this question.
What do the numbers say?
According to Reuters, the leaked draft shows about $4.6 billion in revenue and about $42 billion in net losses for 2025. Revenue grew roughly twelvefold in a year. Operating losses rose from $2.98 billion to $8.06 billion.
Most of the loss is on paper
About $34 billion of the net loss is an accounting expense. As the company’s valuation rises, so does the potential liability from financing instruments that could later convert into shares, and the difference is recorded as a loss. As Joshua Ronen of NYU Stern put it, this loss is actually the result of good news.
Where is the real risk?
The real pressure comes from infrastructure spending. In 2025, $7.33 billion was spent on computing and infrastructure—more than half of total expenses. The company has commitments of about $518 billion for the coming years. What’s more, roughly a quarter of its revenue comes from just two customers.
How does the market see it?
For now, investors are betting on long-term growth. The company’s internal valuation was $965 billion in May, and it is expected to exceed $2 trillion in an IPO.
The bottom line
The $42 billion figure in the headline is largely an accounting effect. The real question is whether the $8 billion operating loss and half-a-trillion-dollar infrastructure commitment will eventually translate into revenue.
