⚡Solana’s biggest-ever upgrade, Alpenglow, goes live today: confirmation time cut from 6 seconds to 0.15 seconds?

According to CoinDesk, Solana activated the Alpenglow consensus upgrade today (10/21) in Epoch 1064. It’s the network’s biggest overhaul since 2020:
🔹Validator votes move off-chain and are bundled into certificates, enabling confirmation in 1–2 rounds. The target for final confirmation is around 150 milliseconds (down from about 6 seconds—roughly 40x faster)
🔹The daily validator voting fee of around 2 SOL is eliminated and replaced with a 0.8 SOL per-epoch access fee, cutting costs by about 60%
🔹The testnet has restarted 6 times since May and also experienced a failed migration that was rolled back before a later migration succeeded
🔹Note: Votes will no longer be recorded on-chain, so the number of on-chain transactions this week will drop noticeably. That doesn’t mean there are fewer transactions

By comparison, full finality on ETH takes around 13 minutes.

Do you think this speed boost will actually bring more use cases for transactions and payments, or is it mostly tech people patting themselves on the back? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
