Less than a month after $387 million was stolen, Bitget turned around and bought a licensed exchange in Thailand—the wound hasn’t even healed, but the visa’s already been sorted.
Official announcement on 10/20: Bitget is acquiring GMO’s licensed Bangkok exchange, GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Z.com EX), through BTGT, a shell company established just at the end of September. GMO shareholders will give up 99.94% of their shares, with closing targeted for 10/31. The price is undisclosed, and regulatory approval is still pending.
On one side, its hot wallet was hacked on 9/24, and there’s still no resolution. On the other, it’s splashing cash around Southeast Asia to collect licenses.
How do you read this script? A: Compliance is speeding up, and a license is a better comfort blanket than a PR statement. B: Bleeding money but still opening branches—user confidence is something you buy, not rebuild.
Sound off in the comments: A or B?
