ZEC is causing a full-blown argument on Crypto Twitter today.

First, the numbers: up 9.75% over 24 hours, peaking at 1,296 and now hovering around 1,261. The 4-hour chart is clear: it rallied from around 1,137, with a huge green candle punching straight through 1,280.

The catalyst just dropped today: the Zcash development team set the activation height for the NU7 upgrade. Block times will be cut from 75 seconds to 25, making payment confirmations nearly three times faster, and 60% of fees will go into a reserve pool to be distributed gradually. The testnet went live in early October. This time, they mean business.

The bulls have a few cards to play: the “privacy Bitcoin” narrative, a hedge against on-chain transparency and AI-powered tracking; the SEC investigation is over, easing the regulatory burden; and Grayscale’s ZEC ETF application is still on the table.

But the bears aren’t messing around either. The bears on Crypto Twitter are throwing out hard numbers: Grayscale’s ZEC ETF saw $59 million in net outflows in October, with zero inflows since September 22. The coin is up 11%, yet institutions are still heading for the exits; it’s still 25% below its September high of 1,699, and the descending trendline hasn’t been broken.

Honestly, both sides have a real case. The upgrade is a concrete bullish catalyst on the supply side; ETF redemptions are a concrete bearish signal on the selling-pressure side. It comes down to who blinks first. An old privacy coin like ZEC can run faster than anything when sentiment turns, and get crushed harder than anything when it fades.

It just touched 1,296, and that’s probably where the bears’ wall is stacked. Narratives are narratives; charts are charts.
