Ethereum’s 200M Gas Limit: First, Be Clear About Which Network

When you see “Ethereum upgrade, higher Gas limit,” it’s easy to jump to the conclusion: Will transfers get cheaper right away?

First, let’s be clear about the network.

On October 16, the Ethereum Foundation announced that Glamsterdam is scheduled to activate on the Hoodi testnet on October 26 at 17:42 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). At that point, Hoodi’s Gas limit will increase to 200M. A mainnet activation date has not yet been set.

Gas is a unit for measuring on-chain computational resources. 200M refers to the block Gas limit—not transactions per second or the fee you’re quoted.

What’s worth watching this time is how far preparations for scaling have progressed. The upgrade includes changes to the block production process, block-level access lists to support parallel processing, and adjustments to the Gas costs of some operations.

So, “blocks can accommodate more work” and “every operation is cheaper” are not the same thing.

For everyday users, the more useful things to watch next are:
• whether the testnet runs smoothly;
• whether wallets and apps have completed their adaptations;
• when the mainnet timeline is officially announced.

These are the steps that turn technical progress into a better user experience. Based on this Hoodi announcement alone, mainnet users don’t need to do anything to upgrade.

Which improvement are you most looking forward to from Ethereum: transaction fees, the confirmation experience, or ease of using apps?
