Netflix beat earnings expectations, yet fell 5.8% after hours. I’m watching just two numbers: 68.69 and 63.62.
Here’s what we know: NFLX Q3 earnings per share were $0.87, above the $0.82 estimate; revenue was $12.87 billion, up 12% year over year.
But Q4 guidance came in below expectations on both fronts: revenue of $13.44 billion vs. $13.51 billion expected, and earnings per share of $0.67 vs. $0.73 expected.
The full-year ad revenue target was cut from $3 billion to $2.7 billion.
It closed the regular session at 68.69 and after hours at 64.72, falling below the 52-week low of 65.08 set on 7/17.
It was already down more than 44% over the year ahead of the earnings report. Just last week, it laid off around 1,000 people and changed its head of content.
My take: This quarter’s beat was mainly due to the timing of expense recognition. The real issue is that revenue growth has slowed for three consecutive quarters, and the advertising business has yet to take off as a second growth engine.
A low price doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cheap.
What I’m doing: Watching, not buying the dip. I’m not catching a falling knife.
First resistance is 68.69 (the close before earnings), then 74.85 (the 50-day moving average). If it closes back above 68.69 in the regular session, my view is invalidated.
Support is at 65.08. If it breaks below the after-hours low of 63.62, don’t rush to buy.
In crypto, I’m watching but not chasing too: THETA in the video sector and BTC as a gauge of risk appetite. I’ll wait until sentiment around U.S. tech stocks stabilizes.
Which way are you betting: will it reclaim 68.69 on Wednesday, or break below 63.62 first?
