Vitalik Buterin has proposed dramatically reducing the load on Ethereum: complex cryptographic computations will no longer be performed on the network itself.
Instead of endlessly expanding the capabilities of the EVM and adding precompiles, Ethereum co-founder is championing EIP-8288. The idea is to perform resource-intensive tasks on the user’s side and send only the generated STARK proof to the blockchain.
The most interesting part of his statement is the timing. Buterin noted that generating these proofs has become so much faster that it can now be done even on ordinary smartphones. This creates enormous potential for scaling L1 without bloating the blockchain itself.
Personally, I think this is a very elegant engineering solution, but it shifts some of the work onto users and their devices.
What do you think: is the future in client-side computation, or should Ethereum still handle this itself?
