Worldcoin is up 9%, but banks haven’t agreed to buy in yet.
On October 18, World launched a World ID suite for banks and financial institutions: an identity wallet, Zoom deepfake detection, and tools to support AI agents.
The design partners are VanEck and Bain Capital, which sounds impressive.
WLD briefly hit $0.55 today, up nearly 9% on the day and at a one-week high, bringing its market cap back to around $2 billion.
But two things don’t add up.
First, no bank has announced that it’s actually using the product. What was announced was a “suite,” not “customers.”
Second, perpetual futures open interest is close to 40% of market cap, and the 8-hour funding rate is negative. Some of today’s gains came from short covering, with $1.08 million in shorts liquidated over 24 hours.
Technically, the price is still grinding around inside a triangle. It hasn’t broken above the $0.58 SAR or the descending trendline at $0.60. Below, watch the 20-day moving average at $0.51.
Also, don’t forget that the current price is still 96% below its 2024 all-time high of $11.74. In early October, it also surged 50% in a month without any news. This asset has always been volatile.
I think this is a classic “narrative first, adoption nowhere” short squeeze. Chasing the rally is basically paying for the design-partner list. Watch, don’t chase—the thesis is invalidated if a real bank customer goes live or the daily close moves above $0.60.
If the banking identity play really takes off, do you think it’ll be the key to WLD’s breakout, or just another narrative-driven pump that fades?
