Why does everyone talk about the Bitcoin halving roughly every four years?
In April 2024, Bitcoin underwent its fourth halving at block 840,000, reducing the block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC.
When discussing the halving, be sure to distinguish “fewer new coins being issued” from “how the price moves”—they’re not the same thing.
The issuance of new coins for $BTC is hard-coded into the consensus rules; no institution can arbitrarily increase the supply. Currently: 81442.42.
