Last Thursday, Arbitrum did something unusual: it put up 2 million ARB as a reward for projects willing to use its stablecoin. Public blockchains paying people to use them is a rare sight in crypto.

A public blockchain’s real moat has never been its TPS benchmarks—it’s where stablecoins settle. Wherever the money is, that’s where the fees and influence are. Arbitrum’s move is clear: first, bring in USDG, a regulated dollar stablecoin issued by Paxos; then hand out tokens to encourage projects to champion it and use it as their primary stablecoin.

The setup is simple: projects with a stablecoin track record can apply. The first ten to reach $10 million in USDG locked value will split the reward pool. Uniswap, Morpho, and GMX have already integrated it.

That said, I’ve seen this old crypto playbook plenty of times: the subsidies stop, and the mercenary capital leaves with them. It pumps fast and dumps just as fast. This ARB will eventually hit the market; the upside is for the ecosystem, not the token price. After the news broke, it briefly jumped more than 15%, but a wobble in the broader market today wiped 3% back off.

This story is betting on “subsidies turning into lasting value,” but Arbitrum has a history of handing out tokens in earlier rounds, only for the money to stop and people to leave. You can understand the logic, but before chasing the rally, take a look at the $0.25 hurdle—it failed to clear it last week.
