🇩🇪 German savings banks are now offering Bitcoin! 50 million customers can buy crypto right in their banking app
I think this news is being seriously overlooked.
The German Sparkassen savings bank group, which serves around 50 million customers, began offering cryptocurrency trading directly in its banking app on October 19.
🔹 Coins available: BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, Polygon
🔹 Partners: DekaBank and the Stuttgart Stock Exchange
🔹 Fees: Starting at just €0.99 per transaction
🔹 Regulation: Operates under BaFin and the EU’s MiCA framework; no need to open a separate account
🔹 Rollout: First five banks launch (including Frankfurter Sparkasse), followed by 30–40 more each month, with nationwide coverage targeted for mid-2027
Until now, buying crypto meant downloading an exchange app, completing KYC, and transferring funds—quite a barrier for many everyday users. Now it’s in the same app people use for bank transfers and paying utility bills. This kind of “seamless integration” is what true mass adoption looks like.
My take: The short-term price impact will be limited, but over the long term, traditional banking channels bring in the hardest-to-reach new users: cautious savers. Once this kind of money comes in, it usually doesn’t chase rallies or panic-sell.
Here’s the question: If your usual banking app let you buy BTC directly, would you buy through your bank or stick with an exchange? Tell us why in the comments 👇
