ZEC’s legacy transaction rules draw attention | Sprout restrictions don’t mean funds are burned | I’ll wait for the mainnet decision
My stance is cautious observation: I don’t interpret “freezing Sprout spending” as meaning all ZEC will be burned, and I won’t chase a trade just because a topic is trending. Binance Square is currently showing #ZcashNU7ProposalWouldFreezeSproutSpending, and ZEC is also listed among the rapidly rising searches in Most Searched. I checked the proposal discussion in the Zcash ZIP repository: the core idea is that NU7 may stop accepting v4-format transactions. Spending older Sprout funds normally depends on this format, so if the current proposal is activated, those funds would no longer be transferable in the usual way. However, wording that proposed “directly burning the remaining Sprout funds” was crossed out in the discussion and moved to a separate idea. Freezing spending and burning the balance are two different things. This does not justify writing that “the total ZEC supply is about to fall,” much less claiming that this has already happened on-chain.
The community’s NU7 timeline lists October 6 for testnet activation, October 20 for deciding the mainnet activation height, and November 5 as the target date for the mainnet upgrade. The page currently remains a plan and checklist; it does not provide a final decision on the height that I can verify as of today. The page also says this upgrade mainly includes 25-second block times, disabling v4 transactions, and NSM integration, with no new transaction format added. Even if the technical direction reaches consensus, moving from candidate rules to actual implementation still requires a decision, implementation, and preparation by nodes and service providers, among other steps. For people holding assets at old Sprout addresses, what really matters is checking their wallet type, backups, and the project’s official migration instructions—and avoiding “upgrade migration” links sent in unsolicited messages. Ordinary users of newer wallets also don’t need to panic and transfer funds blindly just because they hear the word “freeze.”
Why could this affect the price? Retiring the old format could reduce the historical complexity nodes need to maintain, but it also creates execution risks around the usability of older users’ assets, exchange deposits and withdrawals, and infrastructure compatibility. Some may interpret restrictions on the old pool as positive for scarcity, but that doesn’t mean new buying demand will follow. At the time of writing, ZEC/USD on Kraken was around $1,134, with a daily open near $1,153 and an intraday range of roughly $1,117–$1,156. As search interest rose, the price did not also break above its intraday high; at least for now, there is little evidence that “attention has turned into sustained demand.” The levels I’m watching are support near $1,115 and a reclaim near $1,160. If the price falls below $1,115 and then fails to recover on a rebound, the short-term bullish thesis is invalidated. Expectations should also be lowered if the formal mainnet decision is delayed or key wallet or node issues remain unresolved.
If I were trading this myself, I would stay out for now. The only direction I’d consider is a small ZEC spot long after confirmation, with a maximum allocation of 1% of total funds. Entry would require both an official announcement of the mainnet decision and a 1-hour close above $1,160, followed by a successful retest holding above $1,145. The first target is $1,185, where I’d sell half; the second target is $1,210, where I’d close the rest. I’d set a stop below $1,110, and exit early if the price falls back below $1,145 after entry and fails to recover within an hour. If the news is merely an old proposal being recirculated, or the price doesn’t meet the conditions, I’d remain out of the market. A plan that hasn’t been triggered is not a trade, let alone a profit; I wouldn’t use high leverage to bet on the upgrade outcome.
