The Bank of Japan (BOJ) may raise its inflation forecast for the next fiscal year in its report this month, as oil prices put more persistent-than-expected pressure on prices, according to four people familiar with the matter.
After raising interest rates last month, the BOJ is expected to keep them unchanged at its two-day meeting, which concludes on October 30. That outlook could change if the yen continues to weaken sharply, driving up import costs and inflation.
Sources say the BOJ may continue to emphasize rising inflation risks in its quarterly report, due after the meeting, leaving the door open to an interest rate hike as early as December. One source said consumer price increases could last longer than expected, even though underlying inflation has not changed significantly; two other sources shared a similar view.
