WHY 90% OF RETAIL TRADERS LOSE: IT'S NOT THE MARKET, IT'S OUR MINDSET
Yesterday, I told my son, "Drive your bike carefully, don't go over 60 km/h But can he stick to that limit the whole way?
Probably not. Why? Because human nature takes over the moment we get on the road.
This is exactly what happens to us as retail traders. Whether you lost $2,000, $5,000, or $10,000 in this market, ask yourself: Did you really lose because of the charts, or because your brain changed the moment you entered the trade?
The Two-Way Current of Human Psychology:
BEFORE entering a trade: We are calm, logical, and disciplined. We tell ourselves we will strictly manage risk and set stop-losses.
AFTER entering a trade: Panic, fear, greed, and hope take over. When the market moves against us, our mindset flips completely. We move stop-losses, hold losing positions, and break our own rules.
Individual retail traders aren't just playing against price action—we are fighting our own biology.
Why Institutions Win & Retail Loses:
Institutions don't trade as isolated individuals sitting alone in front of a screen. They operate like a structured office with a team of 4 to 11 specialists analysts, risk managers, execution traders, and strategists.
• The risk manager stops the trader from over-leveraging.
• The analyst checks macro data objectively without emotional bias.
• The team keeps every trade governed by strict rules, not personal feelings.
As long as we trade alone without strict rules, we are playing a match against institutional teams while letting our emotions drive the bike past the safety limit.
To survive as a retail trader, you must treat your trading like a structured business:
Create a bulletproof trading plan before opening a trade.
Treat risk management as an unshakeable rule, not a suggestion.
Have an accountability partner or journal to keep your emotions in check.
