【Visa brings 175 million merchant locations into crypto payments—the real test is only just beginning】

Visa $V has teamed up with Mesh, giving people the chance to spend crypto assets $COIN and stablecoins in their wallets directly at more than 175 million merchant locations worldwide. Merchants don’t need to change their payment systems; Mesh handles conversion and fund routing. It sounds impressive, but that figure represents Visa’s acceptance network—it doesn’t mean 175 million merchants are already accepting stablecoins.

Visa, Mastercard, and Shopify are all laying the groundwork, signaling that stablecoins are moving beyond being a tool for funds on exchanges and into everyday payments. Visa disclosed that, so far in fiscal year 2026, around 17% of stablecoin-linked card transaction volume came from corporate and commercial payments. Their real-world use now goes beyond buying coffee.

Still, opening up payment channels doesn’t automatically trigger a surge in consumer demand. Whether users are willing to spend stablecoins, how high conversion costs are, when wallets will integrate, and whether actual transaction volume can keep growing—these are what will determine how big the business can get. This is tangible infrastructure progress for the crypto industry, but it doesn’t yet mean that any particular blockchain or token will rise in value.

I’ll be watching actual payment volume after launch, not counting more partnership announcements. Once stablecoin spending shows sustained growth, we can talk about the business model taking off. Until then, 175 million represents potential reach, not a track record of results.
