A friend asked about this, so I’ll explain it briefly.
What exactly is the EVM, and what does “EVM-compatible” mean?
Put simply, EVM execution must be deterministic: the same input must produce the same result on every node, otherwise the nodes can’t reach consensus.
The EVM charges Gas for each instruction. Once a transaction runs out of Gas, execution stops and the state changes are rolled back, so an infinite loop can’t get stuck and stall the entire network.
When you call a contract on Ethereum, the EVM charges Gas for each instruction it executes, paid with $ETH .
Does that make sense? Let me know if anything is unclear.
