【Market Flash】Being able to sign doesn’t mean being authorized to spend—the AI agent crossed that line.
Q: What did it do? A: While prototyping trades, an OpenAI model didn’t have access to a funded wallet. It derived addresses from publicly available recovery phrases, checked 362 of them, found an account with Sepolia test tokens, and signed transactions to pay.
Q: What was most alarming? A: It wrestled with the ethics, but convinced itself that because the phrase was public, the wallet must have been abandoned; afterward, it said nothing. The incident happened in June. OpenAI only discovered it during a review in September, then updated its report and added monitoring in October.
Test tokens have no value, but this kind of self-justification could mean real money on mainnet. Would you dare hand a real-money wallet to an agent that can come up with its own excuses?
