Lately, I’ve had one cheesy line stuck in my head:
“Rules are rules—eat it and you won’t get heartburn.”

The line comes from a food-service storyline in an AI-animated mini-drama, where a small-time vendor is vouching for their own cooking. Once October rolled around, it went absolutely viral: related topics on Douyin racked up over 2 billion views, posts on Xiaohongshu surpassed 50 million reads, and people across the internet started riffing on it.

The fan-made versions in the comments are especially fun. Some use it as a cure-all reassurance: “The delivery’s late? Eat it and you won’t get heartburn.” “Working overtime to revise the proposal? Eat it and you won’t get heartburn.” Others flip the joke around: take anything too seriously, and you’ll get “heartburn.” The fact that such a corny line could break out of its original niche just goes to show what people are after when they watch mini-dramas: a bit of fun. The more over-the-top the plot and the more addictive the lines, the further they spread. The mini-drama industry gets criticized for formulaic, repetitive content, but audiences clearly can’t get enough of it—proof that “cheesy” is itself a sharp insight into what viewers want. Take it too seriously, and you’ve already lost.
