VITALIK PROPOSES CHANGING HOW ETHEREUM PROCESSES CRYPTOGRAPHY.

Vitalik Buterin has once again turned the spotlight on Ethereum’s technical architecture with EIP-8288, a proposal that aims to simplify the verification of complex cryptographic operations and make it easier to incorporate new security schemes.

The core idea is to bundle digital signatures and cryptographic proofs into a single recursive STARK proof. Instead of requiring the network to process each computationally intensive element separately, mempool nodes could combine these proofs before validators check their validity.

The goal is to reduce verification costs and the volume of data that must circulate across the network, especially as signatures resistant to future quantum attacks come into use.

- Some of these signatures take up several kilobytes, while certain STARK proofs can exceed 128 KB.

The proposal also aims to prevent Ethereum from having to add a new built-in cryptographic function every time a different scheme emerges. This could give it more flexibility to adapt to future security technologies.

EIP-8288 was co-authored by Buterin and Thomas Coratger and remains in draft status. Its implementation will depend on technical decisions and whether it is potentially included in a future network upgrade.

For now, the debate is focused on how to enable Ethereum to verify advanced cryptography at lower cost, without relying on specific changes for each new system.
