Meme market: who moves first, leaders or small caps?
I only pay attention to meme coins when they have independent buying; otherwise, I treat them as volatility.
I gauge sentiment by price changes, not by buzz in chat groups.
PEPE 0.00000411(+7.87%),WIF 0.1988(+5.13%),DOGE 0.0793(+3.18%),SHIB 0.00000499(+2.89%)
Benchmark: BTC 81952(24h +1.23%)。
PEPE’s 24h gain of +7.87% clearly outperformed BTC’s +1.23%, indicating independent buying. But BONK is up only +2.46%, so there’s no sector-wide confirmation. I’d only trade the leader, not chase a catch-up rally.
If the gap between the leader and the weakest coin narrows to within 2 percentage points, independent buying has disappeared, and I’ll close the position.
Data: Binance spot 24h / Binance USDⓈ-M / Yahoo daily (5-day change) / altme_fng / mempool_fees / defillama_chains / coingecko_trending. Missing figures are not filled in.
Would you still hold meme coins when they’re underperforming BTC?

Takeaway: A low VIX means volatility is being suppressed, not that risk has disappeared.
Idea: If the strongest meme coin fails to beat BTC by 2%: treat it as volatility, not a sector move.
