Vitalik just teased Ethereum with another ambitious vision yesterday: EIP-8288, which would slash signature verification costs by over 99%.
Right now, Ethereum has to verify every cryptographic operation on mainnet over and over. Verifying a single post-quantum signature costs 10 million gas. Vitalik’s new proposal: do all the complicated calculations on your phone, and have the chain verify just one STARK proof. Nodes would become proctors who only check the answers.
But! To be honest, this is still just a draft. No client team has started implementing it, there’s no sign of a testnet, and mainnet launch could be a long, long way off.
