German banks are starting to sell crypto—but the coins aren’t yours. They can only be kept at the bank.

On October 19, the German Savings Banks Association (Sparkasse) launched crypto trading in its banking app. Five coins—$BTC , ETH, XRP, SOL, and POL—with more than 230 branches lining up to join; the rollout is set to be complete in the first half of next year. It looks like a dramatic U-turn, with traditional finance entering the market—but the fine print has the bank’s fingerprints all over it: you can buy, but DekaBank holds the coins for you, and you can’t transfer them to your own hardware wallet. In plain English: you pay for the coins, the bank holds them, and you’ll never lay eyes on your seed phrase. The app warns that crypto is “highly speculative” and you could lose everything, while still charging €0.99 per trade plus the full spread.

The comments section is open for business: A) Tens of millions of savers buying in through regulated channels—that’s the real foundation of a bull market. B) You can’t even withdraw the coins—isn’t this just a bank investment product with a crypto logo slapped on it? Sound off!
