Manual Stop-Loss or Forced Liquidation at the Same Price? The Mechanism You Overlook Could Cost You More
For reference: The example below is an illustrative calculation (20x leverage, 2,000 U margin, 40,000 U notional position, and an approximately 2.5% maintenance margin rate, or 1,000 U in maintenance margin). Your actual leverage and the tier for your coin may differ, so the numbers will change, but the principle is exactly the same. The key point in one sentence Liquidation isn’t triggered when your “margin hits zero”—it’s triggered when your margin falls to the “maintenance margin” level. Once triggered, the exchange will liquidate your position at the “bankruptcy price,” which is worse than the liquidation price. If you set a stop-loss manually, you can preserve that maintenance margin; if you’re liquidated, it’s taken too. That extra 1,000 U is how it disappears.
