Quick guide: Cold wallets and hot wallets
Exchanges usually manage their custodial assets in two separate pools: hot wallets and cold wallets. Withdrawals are generally sent from hot wallets.
Cold wallets can also initiate transfers: the transaction is signed on an offline device, then broadcast through an internet-connected device.
Before signing with a cold wallet, carefully check the recipient address and amount shown on the device screen.
Many people keep $BTC in a cold wallet if they plan to hold it for the long term, and leave what they need for everyday use in a hot wallet.
