【Bitmine scoops up another 12,500 $ETH —what does buying nearly 5% of the total supply mean?】
Bitmine added 12,535 ETH to its holdings over the past week. As of October 18, its holdings had reached 6.0415 million ETH, or about 4.9% of the total ETH supply. This is no longer just an ordinary institution buying some coins: when a single publicly traded company holds nearly one-twentieth of all ETH, the market has to consider the implications of such concentrated ownership.
Bitmine’s growing holdings show that the company is still actively accumulating, but they don’t mean the market saw an equivalent amount of net buying over the same period, let alone prove that retail investors, ETFs, and other institutions are following suit. To gauge the strength of buying demand, we also need to look at where its purchases are coming from, how they’re being executed, and the flows on exchanges and in spot markets over the same period.
Bitmine has staked about 5.067 million ETH, or roughly 84% of its holdings. This means a large amount of ETH has entered the staking system, but staking doesn’t mean it’s locked up forever. The withdrawal mechanism and potential future selling pressure still need to be taken into account.
I think continued accumulation provides a genuine signal of institutional demand for ETH. But the more concentrated a single company’s holdings become, the more closely the market needs to watch its ability to raise funds and its holdings strategy. If accumulation slows, the amount staked declines, or the company starts selling, today’s bullish narrative will need to be reassessed.
