How to read funding rates
Got the direction right, but your profits are being eaten away by funding fees? Put simply, many people only watch price movements and never calculate how much they’re paying to hold a position.
1. Open the futures page and find the funding rate and countdown to the next settlement above the coin you hold. First, check whether the rate is positive or negative.
2. Remember the rule: with a positive rate, longs pay shorts; with a negative rate, shorts pay longs. Compare this with your position direction to tell immediately whether you’ll pay or receive.
3. Open the funding rate history and check the last few periods. If rates keep climbing, it means one side is already overcrowded, and both holding costs and the risk of a market pullback are building.
4. Do the math before placing an order: notional position × funding rate × expected number of settlements. If you can’t work out the cost, don’t rush to add to your position.
Note: An extreme rate only indicates crowded positioning; it doesn’t mean a reversal is imminent. Don’t use it alone to call a top or bottom. Settlement intervals vary by coin, so always refer to the real-time figures shown on the trading page.
Do you look at funding rates to avoid holding costs, or to gauge crowded long and short positions? Tell us in the comments—have you ever been charged funding fees without noticing?
