【Hands-on Tutorial】How to Set a Stop-Loss
If you only think about setting a stop-loss after opening a position, it’s often already too late—calculate it based on the loss you can afford before placing your order.
1. Set the maximum loss per trade first: work backward from a fixed percentage of your account balance to determine your position size, rather than picking an amount off the top of your head.
2. Select take-profit/stop-loss in the order panel and enter the trigger price. Avoid placing the trigger price at round-number levels or in noisy areas near immediate support.
3. Prefer mark price as the trigger type to reduce the chance of false triggers from price wicks. Make sure the closing quantity matches your position size.
4. After submitting, review the direction, trigger price, and quantity under Open Orders. Confirm that the order is active before stepping away.
Note: The wider the stop-loss distance, the smaller your position should be. During a price gap, the execution price may differ from the trigger price—stop-losses do not guarantee that you’ll break even.
