Warning: Altcoins Can Go to Zero
Emphasizing that in this market, “not losing money” matters more than “doubling your money.”
Altcoins in 2026: 99% going to zero isn’t fearmongering—it’s happening
thing
Arthur Hayes once said at Consensus Miami,
and it rings especially true today: 99% of altcoins will eventually go to zero, and that’s a normal market shakeout. He compared tokens to software projects—most software projects fail because they can’t attract users. That’s a business norm, not a tragedy (
The problem is that when many people buy altcoins, they assume what they’re holding is
that 1%.
The term “altseason” itself creates an illusion. It brings to mind
the 2021 scene of hundreds of coins soaring, where you could buy anything and watch it rise. But
the 2026 data tells a different story: Bitcoin dominance has climbed above 60.7%, its highest level since May last year③. Altcoin spot trading volume fell from a peak of nearly $50 billion in October 2025 to just $7.7 billion in March 2026, a drop of more than 80%④. On Binance, the share of altcoins
trading above the 200-day moving average fell from over 90% in early October to around 52% within half a month, with nearly half slipping back below the trendline23. Over the past 15 days, more than $134 billion has flowed out of the altcoin market.
More importantly, it’s about the market structure. Wintermute’s view is straightforward: the 2026 altcoin rally will be “concentrated,” with gains potentially limited to a handful of top projects. Institutional clients accounted for 72% of its OTC spot trading volume. The top 10 altcoins accounted for 63% of trading volume.
