Linyuan: I’ve always stayed fully invested, waiting for that 5%!
On October 18, Linyuan once again explained the rationale behind his long-term fully invested approach in an interview: “I’ve always stayed fully invested. Based on the patterns of stock markets around the world, the market rises only 5% of the time; the other 95% is spent falling or moving sideways. We have no other choice. I’m greedy, too—I just keep waiting for that 5%, fully invested.
” Asked whether avoiding downturns during major market crises would lead to better returns, Linyuan replied emphatically: “You can’t avoid them! I’ve surveyed a hundred people, and not one of them could avoid them.” He went on to explain: “If you avoid the downturn, you won’t be there when it rises, either. You have to stay invested.”
This view echoes Pinduoduo founder Duan Yongping’s earlier “ten-year commitment” across time. Duan kept adding to his holdings in Kweichow Moutai during its coldest cycle, while Linyuan stayed fully invested and waited through the lows in consumer and healthcare stocks. Both investors have resisted the temptation to “predict tops and bottoms,” choosing instead to trade time for opportunity.
Laozi said: “Rule the state with uprightness; use stratagem in war; win the world through non-interference.” Linyuan’s “stay fully invested and wait” is an embodiment of “winning the world through non-interference”: don’t fuss, don’t try to time the market, and don’t try to dodge every downturn. Just do one thing: stay the course in the right direction and wait for that 5% to arrive.
Laozi also said, “Weapons are instruments of ill omen.” Short-term speculation—the “stratagem”—may bring a temporary win, but what truly carries wealth through market cycles has always been the “upright path”: a long-term mindset, value investing, and making time your friend.
