The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and semiconductor ETFs had a rough week. By some measures, SMH’s losing streak is nearing a length rarely seen in years, and the sector has also fallen significantly since October. Micron, SK Hynix, and related names have borne the brunt of the sentiment, while leveraged chip ETFs also swung around on crypto platforms over the weekend.

A long losing streak is scary, but that doesn’t mean you should blindly buy the dip. When crowded trades unwind, rebounds often lure investors in before the sell-off resumes. What you really want to see is demand data, inventory figures, and whether earnings reports from companies like Lam and TI this week can shore up the narrative.

If you have too many layers of supply-chain exposure, reduce your concentration first. Chips are a long-term thesis, but that doesn’t mean every pullback is a gift.

I’d rather scale in and set conditions than swear at the charts that “oversold means it has to bounce.”

The easiest mistake to make during a sell-off is to mistake “it’s already fallen a lot” for “it’s safe enough.” Safety depends on your cost basis, time horizon, and cash flow—not the percentage drop.

I believe in the long-term chip story, but you have to survive short-term volatility to benefit from it. Building a position in stages and adjusting it based on conditions is more grown-up than going all in.

Waiting for demand-side data to tell the story is more useful than watching the number of consecutive down days and counting sheep.

An oversold bounce and a trend reversal can look alike. Only position management can determine whether you’re a participant or a bagholder.

At the end of the day, today’s market action looks more like “an attempt at sentiment recovery” than “the trend has already reversed.” You can participate if you want, but come prepared with a stop-loss and a position-size limit.

The number of consecutive down days is just a statistic, not a buy or sell signal. The signal lies in your own criteria and risk budget.
