On October 19, multiple reports said JPMorgan had launched JPM Coin, a deposit token for institutional clients, on Ethereum.

The current account is that it represents clients’ U.S. dollar deposits at the bank and can be used to send and receive payments around the clock in seconds. Other reports say the product had previously launched on the Base network.

My take: this looks more like the bank extending deposit settlement to another blockchain than launching a stablecoin for everyone. Both reports mention Ethereum, but the material provided contains no original announcement from the bank, verifiable contract address, or actual settlement volume. The timing and specific use cases of the earlier Base launch also rely mainly on a single secondhand report and remain unverified.

Next, we’ll need to see the official product description, which institutions actually connect to it, and whether sustained usage appears on-chain. Even if second-by-second payments are verified, a small-scale pilot does not amount to liquidity at scale.

Will bank deposit tokens on public blockchains ultimately open up settlement networks, or merely add an on-chain layer to permissioned bank accounts?
