Up 20%, yet traders are lining up to short? Today's CTUSDT data is a bit contradictory

CTUSDT is up 19.73% today, but its funding rate is -1.5901%.

A negative funding rate means shorts are more crowded than longs—even after a nearly 20% rise, shorts are still adding to their positions. That's counterintuitive.

Here are the details: price 0.3794, 24-hour trading volume 102 million U, funding rate -1.5901%. Funding rates this negative are rare historically. Shorts are paying longs, yet shorts are still piling in.

This tells us two things:

First, this rally isn't being driven by short covering. Short covering can push prices up and reduce short positions, so the funding rate should move toward positive territory. But instead, the rate has become even more negative, suggesting that shorts are actively opening new positions.

Second, the market is betting on a reversal. Even after a 20% rise, some traders think the price will fall—and a lot of them do.

But Wyckoff Radar gave no clear signal for CTUSDT today—it isn't on either the accumulation or distribution list. The radar looks at structural positioning and large-order activity, not price movements.

What you shouldn't do right now:

First, don't chase longs just because the price is up 20%. A negative funding rate combined with a sharp rally means short-term positioning is already very crowded, making it a poor risk-reward trade to chase longs.

Second, don't try to call the top just because the funding rate is negative. Crowded shorts can indeed lead to a short squeeze, but a squeeze is a possibility, not a certainty. A -1.59% funding rate means shorts are paying a steep cost, but high-cost shorts only become dangerous if they can withstand a pullback—if the price corrects by 10%, these shorts might all stop out at once, potentially driving the price into an even deeper hole.

Third, don't treat a single day's data as a trend. One day's funding rate and price movement don't tell you what the trend is; they only show how capital is positioned today.

For a coin like CTUSDT, 100 million U in trading volume isn't small, but it's still an order of magnitude below the major coins. An unusual funding rate is often a short-term phenomenon. It may be sharply negative today and back to normal tomorrow.

When you saw CTUSDT rise today, was your first instinct to chase it or get out?
