ETFs are bleeding, whales are buying up — the glaring divergence at $83,000
Bitcoin has broken above $83,000, but a glaring divergence has emerged in fund flows.
On one side, ETFs are bleeding. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $1.29 billion in outflows in October, while Bitcoin climbed above $82,000 during the same period—defying typical market logic.
On the other side, whales are buying up. Over the past 10 days, whale wallets holding 10–10,000 BTC added a combined 41,025 BTC, bringing their total holdings to 13.64 million BTC, or 67.93% of the circulating supply, while retail wallets largely stayed put. Earlier data showed that key whale cohorts had accumulated a total of 83,105 BTC over the past 30 days. Glassnode also confirmed that approximately 1.07 million BTC have accumulated in the $83,000–$86,000 range, almost entirely in the hands of long-term holders.
How should we understand this divergence? Institutional buyers are absorbing the pressure from ETF redemptions through large on-chain transfers, in stark contrast to the retail outflows reflected in ETF data. ETF outflows show “weak hands” retreating, while on-chain accumulation shows “real money” moving in. Supply above $83,000 is shifting from weak hands to strong hands.
Trading reference: This kind of divergence usually favors the medium-term market structure, but it does not guarantee an immediate short-term rise. Whales’ accumulation support lies in the $83,000–$84,000 range. If the price holds that area, the accumulation thesis remains intact; if it falls below $80,500, the buying may be seen as “trying to catch a falling knife too early.”
