97% of liquidations came from shorts—but longs over the past 24 hours were the real “casualties”

As Bitcoin broke above $83,000 today, shorts took a serious beating.

Short-term data: Around $3.63 million in BTC liquidations occurred in the past hour, 96.3% of them from short positions. Of the $83.51 million liquidated over the past four hours, roughly 96% ($80.12 million) also came from shorts. Ethereum’s rebound to $2,400 triggered a short squeeze across the market, with 99.8% of ETH liquidations in the past hour coming from short positions.

But zoom out to 24 hours and the picture is completely reversed. CoinGlass data shows total derivatives liquidations of about $312 million over the past 24 hours, including $187 million in long liquidations (59.9%) and $125 million in short liquidations (40.1%). Of the $67.7 million in BTC liquidations over the same period, $34.74 million came from shorts and $32.96 million from longs—almost evenly split.

What does this mean? The short squeeze is “fuel for the rebound” in the short term, but over the medium term, long liquidations have been the dominant force over the past day. The market isn’t wiping out shorts in one direction; it’s squeezing both sides near key resistance levels—longs are getting shaken out, while shorts are getting squeezed.

Trading note: A two-sided squeeze means the direction is still unconfirmed. There is a liquidation zone of around $116 million near $83,200. If prices continue to rise, it could trigger nearly $1 billion in short liquidations. But chasing the rally is also risky—long liquidations leading over the past 24 hours suggest that dip-buying positions are not firmly established.
