Your phone number can become the key to your money. And scammers don’t have to steal your smartphone.

SIM swapping is a scam in which criminals take control of someone else’s number by getting a replacement SIM card issued. They can intercept SMS codes, try to regain access to online banking, or take out a loan in someone else’s name.

What to do:

* Register the number in your name or switch to a contract plan, if available.
* Ask your mobile operator about protection against unauthorized SIM replacement.
* Never share SMS codes with anyone, even “bank employees.”
* When changing your number, update it with your banks and important accounts first.

Suddenly lost your signal for no obvious reason? It’s not necessarily an attack, but contact your mobile operator right away. If you suspect your number has been hijacked, notify your bank and secure your accounts.
