When an AI agent reports a price, it’s worth asking one more question: When was this figure last updated?

Suppose you look up a quote at 14:00 that was updated at 13:20. The query was just made, but the data is already 40 minutes old. Whether it’s still usable depends on the source and the use case.

Take Chainlink Data Feeds, for example. The official documentation explains that updates are triggered by price deviation thresholds or heartbeat intervals—not every time the market moves. Update settings may also differ for the same asset across different chains.

The updatedAt field can be used to check when the most recent update occurred.

So, I believe that when an agent or market data tool reports a price, it should at least also state:
• Where the data came from and which chain it’s on
• When it was last updated
• How much time has passed since then

Developers should also set acceptable freshness thresholds based on the use case. If the data exceeds that threshold, flag it as potentially stale and pause any operations that depend on it until the cause has been investigated.

When sharing price screenshots in a community, it’s also worth keeping the timestamp. Beyond the number itself, readers need to know when that information was accurate.

Do the market data tools you use clearly display the “data update time”?
