【ZEC is down 64%, but I’m asking the opposite question: Is it actually worth buying now?】

To be honest, I haven’t really taken a close look at ZEC in a long time.

Why? Because privacy coins stopped being part of the market’s mainstream narrative ages ago. Institutional money stays away, they have no connection to the ETF story, and they’re basically a niche player.

But this time, I specifically dug it out to take a look because of one signal: it’s down nearly 64% from its ATH. At this price, is it an undervalued opportunity, or have the fundamentals already changed?

Let’s start with the technical picture. The $ 1161 level is pretty interesting—it sits right between key support at 1028.9 and resistance at 1210.53. It’s up 3.2% over the past 24 hours, but still down 12.6% overall on the 7-day chart. What does this kind of price action tell us? Bulls and bears are both sitting on the sidelines; nobody dares to make the first move. A break above 1210 would need to be backed by serious trading volume, while a drop below 1028 would depend on whether sentiment across altcoins can hold up.

What about sentiment? The FNG index is at 59, with a weekly average of 57—greed territory, but nothing too heated. There’s one detail worth noting, though: BTC’s market dominance is 60.1%, with capital concentrated in BTC and altcoins generally short on liquidity. In an environment like this, a niche coin like ZEC is more likely to rise or fall based on whether “anyone remembers to buy it” than on any independent fundamental driver.

And what about the business case? That’s what I really want to ask.

Does ZEC still have a use case? To be honest, there’s still demand for private transfers, but it’s also a fact that regulatory pressure is mounting. The 2017 privacy coin boom was driven to a large extent by speculative schemes and demand in gray areas. That part of the market is now under heavy pressure, while the path to regulatory compliance remains unclear. The technology is still evolving, but to be honest, I can’t see a clear commercial future for it.

So here’s my conclusion: ZEC’s low price doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an opportunity. It may simply be that it’s no longer quite so “essential.” The crypto market is never short of cheap assets, and there’s always a reason something is cheap.

A decisive move may be approaching, and trading volume will be key. A move up will take a combination of positive sentiment and capital; a move down could mean a test of support at 1028.

What do you think of coins like this that are “oversold but niche”? Tempted to jump in, or have you stopped paying attention altogether?
