One of the most common mistakes beginners make in their first week: treating “trending” as a “buy signal.”
Today, $CELO ranked second in trending searches on Binance Square, but when I checked the data, it had barely moved in 24 hours (around 0%). CoinGecko showed 24-hour trading volume of only about $1.5 million, and OKX perpetual open interest was around $450,000.
High buzz ≠ money flowing in. For a coin with such low volume, one large order could cause a big price swing, and your stop-loss could execute at a worse price than you set.
For comparison: $AERO, which ranked first among CoinGecko’s trending coins, had 24-hour trading volume of around $51 million, but its price actually fell about 3.6%. High volume doesn’t mean the price will rise, either.
My habit: when I see a coin trending, I check three things first: trading volume, the intraday high and low, and the funding rate. Then I decide whether to touch it.
