【Market Update】The U.S. government spent $1.052 trillion on interest alone in one year, a record high—equivalent to about one-fifth of total annual federal revenue. According to U.S. Treasury data, interest on the national debt rose 8% to $1.052 trillion in fiscal year 2026, up from $970 billion the previous fiscal year, while total federal revenue grew just 3.2% over the same period to about $5.40 trillion. Interest costs are rising significantly faster than revenue, putting increasing pressure on public finances. With interest consuming one-fifth of revenue, how much fiscal room is left?
