【Old Leek Watch】CFTC advances the RegCAM framework: U.S. crypto platforms may gain a new federal compliance pathway
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is advancing Regulation CAM, with plans to establish a regulatory pathway better suited to the industry for trading platforms dealing in crypto assets.
First, $BTC : Watch compliant trading channels. Bitcoin is one of the key assets in discussions about U.S. crypto regulation. If eligible platforms are able to offer related trading under clearer rules in the future, what’s worth watching is whether trading channels and institutional participation in the U.S. market expand—not whether to conclude that BTC will rise as soon as regulatory news breaks.
Second, $ETH : Watch the rules for spot and leveraged trading. Ethereum has both spot trading and a mature derivatives market. The new framework’s specific requirements for margin, customer funds, and trade surveillance could affect how platforms design products for U.S. retail users.
Third, $SOL and XRP: Watch which platforms are covered. Both have active trading markets, but whether specific products can be included in the new framework will still depend on the applicable rules, platform registration status, and relevant legal requirements. Advancing a regulatory framework does not mean these coins will automatically qualify for new listings.
Fourth, compliant platforms may be the first to benefit. If the rules reduce regulatory uncertainty, platforms that meet the requirements may gain a clearer path to operating. However, additional compliance costs, product restrictions, and implementation details will also affect the actual impact.
Old Leek Watch: Next, focus on whether the final rules clearly specify which trading models are permitted, how margin and customer asset protection requirements are set, and whether major platforms announce plans to apply for the relevant registrations.
Greater regulatory clarity is a step in the right direction, but whether it translates into a genuine increase in capital inflows will depend on whether trading channels expand and trading volumes continue to grow.
