#zcashnu7提案拟冻结sprout支出
【Old Leek Watch】A Zcash upgrade may make more than 22,000 coins $ZEC unusable; even having the private keys may not be enough to transfer them
Zcash’s next network upgrade, NU7, is considering a rule that would affect the old Sprout privacy pool: disabling legacy v4 transactions.
According to recent reports, around 22,309 ZEC remain in the Sprout pool. If the rule is adopted as proposed, these funds will no longer be spendable through the existing protocol after the upgrade. Even if holders still have their private keys, they will not be able to bypass the network rules to make a transfer.
There are three key points to understand.
First, this does not affect all ZEC. The funds primarily affected are those still in the old Sprout pool; this should not be taken to mean that wallets across the entire Zcash network are frozen.
Second, being unable to spend the coins does not mean they are destroyed. These coins will not simply disappear from the total supply as a result; they may instead become unusable. Whether access can be restored in the future will also depend on whether the community proposes and approves another solution.
Third, the upgrade comes down to a trade-off between security and compatibility. Sprout is an early privacy protocol, and developers want to phase out the old transaction format to reduce maintenance and security burdens. But for holders who still have funds in the pool, the cost could be very real.
The timeline for NU7’s mainnet rollout is still subject to the final announcement. Recent reports have cited November 5 as the target date.
The significance of this for ZEC is not just that it is a technical upgrade. It is also a reminder to all holders that whether blockchain assets can be spent depends not only on private keys, but also on whether the protocol continues to support the relevant transaction methods in the future.
