Anthropic announced on October 18 that it would contribute 5% of its shares to a newly established public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval. According to ChainCatcher, the fund’s ownership stake may grow as the company’s valuation rises: its board can choose to add another 2% whenever the valuation increases 50% above a set baseline.

The fund will be established as a wholly owned LLC rather than as a 501(c)(3) or another type of entity, allowing it to adjust among different forms of giving. Its Anthropic shares will not be used for lobbying or political donations in the United States or abroad. The company said the fund could make large donations to established nonprofits or distribute funds directly to specific groups. Anthropic has previously pledged $200 million for research into and responses to AI’s effects on the labor market.

Anthropic said most of its mission-related work will continue within the company, including AI safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research, and discounted Claude access for nonprofits and research institutions. At the company’s founding, its co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings. Anthropic also runs an equity donation-matching program in which about half of employees participate. Including the new commitment, about 20% of Anthropic’s shares will be dedicated to public benefit, with the share potentially rising after certain valuation milestones. The company plans to announce the fund’s structure, governance, and related milestones in the coming months.
