The Cost of 50x Leverage

At three in the morning, the blue light from Chen’s phone illuminated his face. He hadn’t slept well in three days.

Three days earlier, Chen had watched AMP suddenly surge, climbing from 0.000701 to 0.000844—a gain of more than twenty percent. Someone in the group chat called it the next 100x coin, and Chen felt tempted. He opened the Binance futures page and stared at the AMPUSDT trading pair, his finger hovering over the screen as he hesitated for a long time.

“Just this once. I’ll go long with 50x leverage. A two percent rise will double my money.” That was how he convinced himself.

His margin was 20,000 U—the wages he’d saved over three months. Chen took a deep breath and tapped Buy. His heart was pounding like a drum, and his palms were covered in sweat.

At first, everything went smoothly. AMP slowly climbed from 0.000788, and Chen’s unrealized profit had already topped 1,000 U. Excited, he paced around his room, already thinking about how he’d spend the money: get a new phone, pay off his credit card, and save the rest to keep growing his trading capital.

Then the market turned.

At 2:40 a.m., a huge red candle came crashing down. AMP plunged from 0.000820 to 0.000750, and Chen’s position instantly went from profit to loss. He stared at the numbers flashing on the screen, his fingers trembling. He wanted to add to his position, to hold on and wait for a rebound.

“It’ll come back. It has to come back,” he kept telling himself.

But the market waits for no one. AMP kept falling: 0.000730, 0.000710, 0.000701. The liquidation price crept closer and closer. Chen stared at the number, feeling as if every second were cutting him with a knife.

At 3:12 a.m., a notification appeared on his phone: Your AMPUSDT futures position has been liquidated.

20,000 U. Gone.

Chen tossed his phone onto the bed and sank to the floor. In the distance, he could hear cars passing outside. The room was terrifyingly quiet. He remembered what his girlfriend had said before he entered the trade: “Stop gambling.” Back then, he’d thought she didn’t understand, that this time was different.

Now he understood. In the futures market, nothing is ever different.

The next morning, Chen opened the market page. AMP had already rebounded to 0.000788, as if nothing had happened. He checked GTC and ERA too: one had climbed to 0.2618, the other to 0.0693—both numbers glowing green.

Those gains had nothing to do with him anymore.

Chen turned off his phone, went out, and bought a cup of coffee. Standing by the street and watching people come and go, he suddenly felt that the lesson he’d paid 20,000 U for had actually been cheap. Some people lose far more than money.

He opened the notes app on his phone and wrote one line: Never gamble with money you can’t afford to lose.

Then he deleted the futures app.
