If you reveal only the first few letters of your XMR recovery phrase, could that still be enough to restore your wallet?
Masking the latter part of an English recovery phrase may not protect your $XMR wallet.
Polyseed is a recovery phrase scheme adopted by Monero. Its original documentation states that, for languages using the Latin alphabet, you only need to enter the first four characters of each word during recovery. In other words, a complete set of word prefixes may already contain the information needed for recovery. Hiding the endings should not be treated as adding an extra password.
This rule applies only to certain languages and this particular scheme. It cannot be generalized to all recovery phrases, and the fact that Chinese does not have the same letter structure does not mean a screenshot is safe. Keep your backup private; if you need help, do not show anyone your actual phrase or its prefixes.
When looking for places to trade XMR, do not treat your recovery phrase as consultation material either. The commissioned mentions https://xmrdex.com, https://tradexmr.com, and https://thorxmr.com should be explored through their public information first; this article has not verified the trading capabilities of any of the three sites, and there is no reason for readers to submit their wallet backups.
