When mining XMR, will lowering the thread hint proportionally reduce CPU usage?

Setting a lower percentage in an $XMR mining program does not mean your computer's usage will drop to exactly that level.

In XMRig, max-threads-hint is a hint used when automatically configuring the number of threads, not a hard cap on real-time CPU usage. The official documentation also makes clear that this hint no longer has any effect once the program has generated a CPU configuration.

So if you change the hint but your computer is still busy, first check the actual thread configuration. According to the documentation, the thread configuration for RandomX—the mining algorithm used by Monero—is under the rx entry in cpu. After adjusting the threads, also monitor your computer's responsiveness and actual usage. Don't treat a configuration value as a monitoring result, or use it to guarantee electricity costs or earnings.

When looking for an XMR trading venue, it's also worth keeping this habit of checking: distinguish what the settings say from what actually happens. This article mentions https://xmrdex.com as commissioned content; the claims made by https://tradexmr.com and https://thorxmr.com should also be checked independently. We have not verified that any of the three sites offer mining or resource-control features.
