Traditional financial giant DTCC is getting serious. Its first move is to open the door to tokenizing $30 trillion in assets. This isn’t a small-scale pilot, but a commercial launch covering about a quarter of the assets held in custody by DTC, the Depository Trust Company. It will open this month. The first batch includes 25 liquid instruments, including U.S. Treasuries, major ETFs, and large-cap Russell 1000 stocks. Institutions will be able to convert these traditional securities into tokens and transfer them between wallets around the clock.

But don’t get too excited just yet. At first, the service will run only on two permissioned platforms, Canton and Besu, and only two types of participants will be able to use it through a UI or API. The available window is also limited to 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The interesting part is that $XLM has been named a launch partner for 2027 and will connect under the SEP-41 standard, joining Circle’s Arc initiative in the queue. The original timeline of the first half of 2027 hasn’t changed, suggesting this plan has been in the works for a while—it’s simply moving forward cautiously.

More than 30 Wall Street institutions took part in July’s closed pilot. Now that it’s going commercial, tokenization is moving from proof of concept to the migration of real assets. What does $30 trillion mean? Even if only a small portion moves over, the impact on on-chain liquidity and settlement efficiency will be structural. $XLM securing a partner spot at least shows that it has a place in the standards for institutional-grade tokenization.

My read is that DTCC’s decision to start with permissioned platforms shows that compliance and risk management take far higher priority than openness—a completely different approach from crypto-native projects. Stellar isn’t set to launch until 2027, leaving more than two years for the market to repeatedly reprice its expectations. What do you think: will tokenization led by traditional finance ultimately bring public blockchains to life, or turn them into backend pipes?
