AI’s Big Spender Faces Judgment Day: Wednesday After the Close
Meta reports its Q3 earnings after the market closes Wednesday (10/21).
The entire AI trade is waiting for answers.
Last week, CoreWeave’s debt blew up, the Nasdaq fell 4.48% for the week, and the semiconductor index dropped 11.4%.
The million-dollar question: When will AI infrastructure spending pay off?
Meta is the biggest spender of them all: its full-year capex guidance is $130B–$145B, nearly double last year’s.
Q2 EPS of $6.18 came in well below expectations of $7.18 (-13%), with runaway expenses to blame.
The stock is currently at $709.33, down 9% from its 52-week high.
Market consensus: Q3 revenue of $63.29B and adjusted EPS of $6.85.
Options imply a ±6% move.
The stock has fallen after 3 of its last 4 earnings reports.
I think this report will determine whether the “AI spending playbook” can still be forgiven: ad growth has to offset rising expenses, and the earnings call needs to spell out a timeline for returns on AI investment in 2027. If either is missing, I’m staying on the sidelines.
Thesis invalidation: If the call signals a slowdown in capex in 2027, or Q3 ad growth exceeds 24% (Goldman’s forecast), my view is invalidated.
What will you be watching more closely this earnings report: whether ad results beat expectations, or whether capex starts to moderate?
