$GTC has pushed the close higher for three consecutive hours. In the latest hour, volume, price, and open interest all increased, so I’m watching more closely to see whether the rebound can hold. But the funding rate is deeply negative, and that alone isn’t enough to call a short squeeze. I still wouldn’t chase the freshly formed high; I want to see what remains after a pullback.
At 03:03 Beijing time on October 19, Binance GTCUSDT perpetual was around 0.27477, up 22.19% over the rolling 24 hours, ranking third among the 523 eligible USDT perpetual contracts fully captured. GTC is associated with Gitcoin. The ranking brought it onto my radar; what really changed my short-term view was the shift from recovery to a sustained advance after midnight.
It was still down 2.91% from 23:00 to 24:00 on the 18th, closing at 0.24773. It rebounded 1.52% from 00:00 to 01:00 on the 19th, rose another 4.70% from 01:00 to 02:00, then gained 4.05% from 02:00 to 03:00, closing at 0.27419. The lows and closes have continued to rise over the past three hours, and the latest close also moved above the previous hour’s high of 0.26619. This shows the recovery has cleared a level that can be verified.
Holding that level matters more than looking at the high alone. The 02:00–03:00 high was 0.27500, and the final close was 0.27419, giving back only about 0.29%. However, the low of 0.26005 was still below 0.26619, so we can’t yet say the old high held throughout the entire hour. The close has now moved above it; whether a subsequent pullback can turn the old high into support still needs to be tested over a complete hourly candle.
Volume provides support, but there is also a sign of cooling. Volume was about 3.3994 million USDT from 00:00 to 01:00, 5.0606 million from 01:00 to 02:00, and 7.5905 million from 02:00 to 03:00, an increase of 49.99% in the latest hour. The higher volume accompanied a higher close, not an obvious long upper wick. However, the hourly gain narrowed from 4.70% to 4.05%, while the share of taker buy volume fell from 52.24% to 50.93%. Participation has increased, but the advance hasn’t accelerated in tandem, so higher volume shouldn’t be taken to mean that the price will rise faster from here.
Over the same hour, open interest rose from about 30.233 million GTC to 32.0017 million, an increase of 5.85%. This lets us compare price and OI over the same window, but the direction of the new positions is still unknown; we can’t describe this as net inflows into longs.
Another figure worth considering separately is the actual funding rate settled at midnight: -0.424958%, more negative than the -0.228861% recorded at 20:00 on the 18th. A negative funding rate usually means shorts pay longs at settlement, so the cost of holding positions deserves attention. It is not the next funding rate, nor does it prove that liquidations have already occurred. The combination of rising prices, increasing OI, and negative funding could intensify the divergence of views, but direct liquidation evidence is still needed to confirm a short squeeze.
The four-hour picture hasn’t fully shifted yet. The 20:00–24:00 period on the 18th was still down 1.92%, while the 00:00–04:00 period on the 19th, which includes the latest rebound, hasn’t closed yet. It’s too early to declare a four-hour reversal. I haven’t found any recent announcement that could independently explain this rally, so older project news shouldn’t be treated as a catalyst for tonight’s move.
Next, I’ll first watch whether an hourly close after a pullback can hold around 0.26619, then whether price can hold above 0.27500. If it goes on to challenge the October 18 high of 0.28322 from 12:00 to 16:00, we should also distinguish between touching that level and holding above it. If price falls below 0.26005 and fails to recover, the recent structure of rising hourly lows will need to be reassessed.
