The most punctual thing waiting for me after work every day isn’t my alarm clock—it’s the orange cat downstairs.
I get to the entrance at 7:30 p.m., and it’s already sitting there at 7:29, swishing its tail, looking at me like it’s saying, “What took you so long?”
Even more ridiculous is how my life is set up now:
My dinner: a cheap 9.9 delivery meal, with a note saying “extra rice, please.”
Its dinner: imported freeze-dried food with goat milk powder. I even have to check the ingredients in case it’s allergic to something.
Last week, it brought a kitten along. My first thought wasn’t “Aww, so cute!” It was “Oh no, the food bill’s about to double.”
Honestly, sometimes I feel like I’m not the one taking care of the cat—the cat’s taking care of me.
On nights when I’m falling apart from working overtime, seeing it waiting for me in the same old spot on my way home gives me a feeling of being needed that’s way more real than any promises my boss makes.
The emotional state of young people these days: leave people on read or send random replies, but reply to cats instantly.
Is there a little “supervisor” like this downstairs from you, too?
