“The other person is typing…” Then they disappeared.

This might be the longest-running suspense drama in adult social life—it never ends badly; it just quietly fizzles out.

You stare at those few words for three minutes. Maybe they’re just going to say “Oh.”
You draft an 800-word essay in your head, while they might just be deleting a punctuation mark.

Eventually, I figured out that the most graceful social etiquette is:
When the message disappears, pretend you didn’t see it;
when they pretend they never typed it, pretend you weren’t waiting.

Honestly, most of what gets deleted isn’t anything important.
What gets deleted is that fleeting burst of courage to “say it, but not dare to.”
Don’t let those three words eat away at you—send what you want to say, or hold down and unsend it if you don’t.
In the end, the people who truly stick around are the ones you can never delete.
